Sylvia L. Brown,
Author, Reading Consultant, Motivational Speaker, and Private Tutor

Sylvia Brown graduated with honors from South Carolina State University, and received her Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. She served as a public school speech pathologist for 26 years, and an elementary school administrator for 4 years. Brown is an expert at training teachers to increase reading skills with children and literacy skills with adults. Brown is one of few consultants in education who has actually taught preschool students, elementary students, middle and high school students, and adult students to learn to read with phonics effectively. During her tenure as principal at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, test scores increased significantly each year under her leadership. Although she led a school on the Oklahoma “at risk” list in 1994-1995, during the 1996-97 school year, third grade students at Whitman scored in the 51st percentile (composite) on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. That year, Whitman’s students scored in the 63rd percentile in spelling. Brown was instrumental in leading her teachers to use the phonics reading program, reading, teaching spelling, writing, and teaching reading comprehension skills to increase test scores and literacy skills. Her mission is to teach this simple process to teachers, volunteers, parents, and grandparents and to increase test scores and literacy across America. The Simply Phonics, Simply Reading© language arts program is complete and exceedingly effective in teaching spelling, teaching reading comprehension skills, and helping to improve literacy skills.

Teaching reading skills through teaching phonics effectively to America's youth is Sylvia's passion.  She created this phonics program to make learning phonics more enjoyable for youth of all ages as well as adults.

Sylvia is married to John Brown, Jr., president of Majestic Scholar Publishing Company. They have two sons, Derwin, an attorney in Washington, D. C., and Ivan, an engineer in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia.
